The tree planters' holiday! The purpose of this celebration is to encourage tree planting and promote tree care. Typically this holiday is observed by the planting of saplings. Either by a large group planting in a designated area or by giving out saplings for people to plant in their own yards or property.

Arbor Day was started in the small town of Nebraska City by J. Sterling Morton in 1872. This Nebraska City News editor came up with this idea to promote tree planting in the prairie states to provide shelter, fruit, fuel, and to help stop erosion. He presented his idea to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture and the first Arbor Day was celebrated by planting more than a million trees in Nebraska.
