Bennie Maupin
Born August 29, 1940
Prolific
Jazz musician best known for his
Bass Clarinet playing on the epic
Miles Davis album
Bitches Brew. One excellent moment featuring Maupin's contribution to that album is about 4 minutes into the title track, where there is a breakdown that features Maupin's bass clarinet curling around the
Fender bass of
Harvey Brooks.
After his stint with
Miles, where he also appeared on classic
fusion albums such as
On The Corner and
Big Fun, Maupin spent years playing various woodwinds with
Herbie Hancock.
The
1980s were a quiet
decade for Maupin, although he has resurfaced in the last few years, appearing on new artists' records such as
Me'Shell NdegéOcello and writing linear notes for some of
Columbia's reissues of the Miles Davis catalog.
