The newly discovered spider was officially described as Heteropoda
davidbowie in September of 2009. The spider is covered in frizzy yellow hair, giving it a strong resemblence to Bowie's character, Jareth the Goblin King, from Labyrinth.
The big Malaysian species was apparently named for David Bowie in tribute to his 1972 album, The Rise and Fall of
Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and his "Glass Spider" tour from the 80's.
Spider specialist Peter Jäger, who discovered the species, has a history of naming spiders for famous people. He does so to try to attract the public's interest in spiders, and to draw attention to the risks of habitat loss and extinction many arachnids are facing.
