The Davis Mountains are the most extensive
mountain range in
Texas. Also known as "the
Alps of Texas", they were created by
volcanic activity during the
Tertiary geologic period and began to form about 48 million years ago. Many of the peaks in the range are more than 6,000 feet in
altitude. Major peaks include Mt. Livermore, which at 8,382 feet is the 4th-highest summit in the state.
The mountain range was named after Jefferson Davis (U.S. Secretary of War and later President of the Confederacy).
