A 20th century
avant-garde composer who is best known for his
symphonies for multiple
electric guitars. These symphonies rely heavily on volume, repetition, dissonance, and distortion for their effects. In many ways, Branca's approach to composing is primarily influenced by musical
minimalism.
His musical career began in the late 70s-early 80s as part of the New York City no wave scene until he eventually moved into composition. At least one member of the influential avant-rock band Sonic Youth (Lee Renaldo) played in his guitar symphonies, and Branca's electric guitar sounds definitely influenced Sonic Youth.
