Parkes, is a small town located near the centre of the the
Australian state of
New South Wales. Parkes is not a particularly large town, but it is host to a large
CSIRO research
telescope, and features both
gold mining and
farming as industries.
Parkes is the subject of a film called
The Dish, about this small town's role in the
Apollo XI Moon Landing. Because the US needed contact with the moon, and because the earth turns, Parkes was of tremendous strategic importance at that time.
