A
monotheistic religion founded in 1469 by
Guru Nanak. The religion was led by a series of ten
gurus until the last declared that the Guru Granth Sahib (the collected
holy scripture, written by the ten gurus) was the last
guru, and the only one the people would ever need. Includes ideas of
reincarnation based on
deeds but also the
forgiveness available from
God, the rejection of
idolatry and the
caste system, and the belief that the work of
God can be seen in all his
creation.
The customary headgear of Sikh men is a turban, symbolising equality and denial of caste and also helping to keep their hair in order. (Many Sikhs will not cut their hair: if God chose that humans should grow hair, then it is good in His sight, so why should humans cut it off?)
Another token of Sikhism is the Kirpan.
