Season 1887/88
The most notable fixture of the season was the first ever match against Arsenal,
or the Royal Arsenal as they were then called, and was to become one of the
greatest of all derby fixtures. According to reports at the time, Arsenal
turned up late , scored an early goal and defended for the rest of the match.
They were only saved from defeat by the fall of darkness.
