In the
corporate world, an
unimaginative method for giving
network names to
computers by their
processor,
brand,
ip address,
function, or other features.
Among hackers with large numbers of computers to name, a good naming system is self-consistent, humorous, and is usually a based on obscure references to literature, mythology, cartoons, or other interesting things. See the sitename entry in the Jargon File.
I used to work in an educational institution; at one point, the choice for naming systems was between alcoholic beverages and muppets. I voted for the alcoholic beverages (and the idea of fine wines for the professors and cheap booze, like moonshine and rotgut, for the graduate students) but i lost.
