Mathematical definiton: To solve an equation for a variable is to find the values of that variable for which the equation is true. For example:
x + 2 = 5
This equation has only one solution, which is
x = 3

Abbreviated "solv." This Latin term, which is frequently used in medicine and pharmacy, means "dissolve".
