The logo for the e-server is an @ symbol but with an e instead of an a. I'm not sure what the e stands for, but I'm pretty sure it is enterprise, because it would be somewhat redundant (and stupid) to call them electronic-servers. There are currently four e-server series available, each designated by an arbitrary letter:

e-server xSeries: Formerly Netfinity, these are IBM's plain ol' Intel based servers. Nothing too fancy or innovative here, just a spiffy new name. Netfinity are in my opinion some of the best Intel based servers around.

e-server iSeries: Formerly AS/400, these are generally used for running business applications like accounting. Green and black terminals and RPG and COBOL a-plenty. I'm not fond of the new name they gave to AS/400. It makes me think of their crappy Thinkpad iSeries line.

I just got it last week. Why anyone thinks that an A+ Certification verifies any computer skills is beyond me. There are two tests, hardware and DOS/Windows. The questions on these tests are for the most part obsolete and the knowledge required to answer them is impractical. The hardware test asks questions like "What is the voltage on a Pentium CPU" and "What is the standard IRQ for LPT2". The DOS/Windows test requires you to know "What information does the DETLOG.TXT file contain" and "What information is not available in the MSD.EXE program". I know people who think they are techie gurus for passing this test. What they don't seem to realize is that memorizing these fairly useless facts from an A+ study guide will not be of any use to them on the job.

I have been looking for a new job for two months. I have over three years experience as a lowly computer technician, and one year experience as an NT administrator, but since I lacked certification
…astrology (idea)http://m.everything2.com/user/Lethal/writeups/astrologyLethalhttp://m.everything2.com/user/Lethal2000-12-18T20:06:18Z2000-12-18T20:06:18ZAstrology is a sort of pseudo-religion popular among hippies and drug addicts. It has something to do with the stars, but for the most part believers think that the month in which you are born determines everything about you, including your personality and behavior. They also seem to believe that everyone born in the same month will have the same future. I don't believe in astrology. I think it's a bunch of bullshit, myself. Still, if people want to believe in it they're free to do so. Some people who believe in astrology constantly piss me off though. Many of them are constantly trying to evangelize me. They attempt to analyze me and tell me how to live my life based entirely around the day I was born. They make vague assumptions about my personality and if they happen to guess correctly they congratulate themselves and try and use it as an example of the power of astrology. It doesn't matter how many times I denounce it to these people; they continue to try and convert me.

(idea)http://m.everything2.com/user/Lethal/writeups/What+is+Everything%253FLethalhttp://m.everything2.com/user/Lethal2000-12-08T21:21:22Z2000-12-08T21:21:22ZUnfortunately, no one can be told what Everything is. You have to see it for yourself.

Even though that quote is a lame rip-off, it actually pertains to be true. I have tried to explain to some of my friends what Everything is, and tell them about my experiences as an Everythingian and I have found that it isn't easy to put into words. Everything isn't a message board and it isn't a chat room. It's more than just a database and more than a community. It's a place where you can teach and you can learn. It's a place where you can share without restrictions on topic or content. There really isn't anything quite like Everything. It's almost impossible to put a label on it. You really to have to see and use it before you can understand what it's all about. When I try and tell my friends about it they usually just call me a computer nerd or a loser or something like that. Simple minds just don't understand.
Lyra (thing)http://m.everything2.com/user/Lethal/writeups/LyraLethalhttp://m.everything2.com/user/Lethal2000-11-27T20:31:15Z2000-11-27T20:31:15ZRCA Lyra and me: A testimonial

I've been with the MP3 "scene" for a long time (about 3 years). I'd been meaning to get a portable MP3 player since they were available, but I didn't want to dish out $200 for one. This weekend an opportunity arose. My friend had just got a brand new RCA Lyra but couldn't figure out how to use it and was too lazy to take the time to learn. He offered to sell it to me for $150. I considered but then declined. Later that day he asked for a ride to San Francisco. I told him no, but then he said he'd give me the Lyra for a ride and $40. I couldn't pass that up. So now I am the proud owner of an RCA Lyra portable MP3 player.

After getting it from my friend I took it home and hooked it up to my PC. My friend neglected to give me the software or manual so I was on my own. It came with cables to hook up the memory card to my PC's parallel port.
