<p>A <a href="/title/photography">photographic</a> emulsion is the blend of <a href="/title/chemistry">chemicals</a> that holds <a href="/title/crystal">crystals</a> of (typically) <a href="/title/silver">silver</a> together in <a href="/title/film">a coherent form</a> so that when <a href="/title/light">light</a> is shined upon the <a href="/title/surface">surface</a> of the emulsion, an <a href="/title/picture">image</a> is formed instead of a slightly darker <a href="/title/broth">stew</a> of chemicals. <a href="/title/inaccurate">More simply</a>, it holds all the <a href="/title/photosensitive">photosensitive</a> chemicals together in a <a href="/title/film">convenient semi-gelatinous form</a>.</p>
<p>The <a href="/title/chemical">chemical</a> definition of emulsion is a <a href="/title/stable">stable</a> <a href="/title/solution">solution</a> of one liquid in a second <a href="/title/immiscible">immiscible</a> liquid--for example, whole <a href="/title/milk">milk</a>, which has <a href="/title/milkfat">milkfats</a> dispersed evenly in <a href="/title/water">water</a>. <p>Reticulation, in <a href="/title/photography">photography</a>, is the <a href="/title/process">process</a> of <a href="/title/break">fracturing</a> the film for <a href="/title/creative">creative</a> <a href="/title/effect">effect</a>. The effect itself is akin to the fractures in <a href="/title/shatterproof">shatterproof</a> glass: cracks that form after it <a href="/title/shatter">shatters</a> but before it actually <a href="/title/decompose">falls apart</a>. The word reticulation outside of photography means, as <a href="/title/Webster+1913">Webster</a> so deftly put it, netlike. If you can <a href="/title/imagine">imagine</a> the <a href="/title/broken">broken</a> shatterproof glass again, it does look vaguely netlike and <a href="/title/interconnected">interconnected</a>.</p>

<p><strong><big>How is reticulation <a href="/title/create">created?</a></big></strong></p>
<p>Reticulation is created by <a href="/title/hot+plate">heating</a> <a href="/title/film">film</a> <a href="/title/negatives">negatives</a> in <a href="/title/water">water</a> to a high <a href="/title/temperature">temperature</a>, then <a href="/title/plunge">plunging</a> them into an <a href="/title/ice">ice</a> <a href="/title/bath">bath</a> to fracture the <a href="/title/emulsion">emulsion</a> by way of <a href="/title/differential+expansion">differential expansion</a>. Who are dancing. That's the quick version.
<p>
The long <a href="/title/version">version</a> is that dance photography takes a particular natural <a href="/title/talent">talent</a>, <a href="/title/vision">vision</a>, and the usual <a href="/title/practice+makes+perfect">practice</a>. For <a href="/title/the+love+of+god">the love of god</a>, practice. I'm also assuming you already know the <a href="/title/fundamental">fundamental</a>s of black and white photography pretty well. With that said, here are ten tips in whatever order I feel like putting them in.
<p>
1. Practice. You won't get better without it, I <a href="/title/assure">assure</a> you. And it's <a href="/title/fun">fun</a>! ...Right?
<p>
2. You have to enjoy taking/<a href="/title/process">process</a>ing/<a href="/title/printing">printing</a> photographs or those long hours in the <a href="/title/darkroom">darkroom</a> will feel less and less like an entertaining <a href="/title/escape+from+reality">escape from reality</a> and more like another day at the <a href="/title/salt+mines">salt mines</a>.
