Tentacle Penis's New Writeupshttp://everything2.com/?node=New%20Writeups%20Atom%20Feed&foruser=Tentacle Penis2000-09-22T22:02:51Zdrunken speech (thing)http://m.everything2.com/user/Tentacle+Penis/writeups/drunken+speechTentacle Penishttp://m.everything2.com/user/Tentacle+Penis2000-09-22T22:02:51Z2000-09-22T22:02:51ZA classic piece of silliness in text-based MUDs, particularly those of the DIKU breed. Drunken speech allows players to, after quaffing alcoholic liquids, think they're speaking normally while the rest of the world sees slurred gibberish.

Example:

Player sees:

say hello
You say 'hello'

Everyone else in the rooms sees:

JoeBob says, 'HeeEElLooooo'
JoeBob belches loudly.

This hopefully results in social embarassment, especially if the drunken player doesn't realize what they've just imbibed.

It is interesting to note that in most cases, whether a player is drunk is a boolean state; any alcohol whatsoever will impair their speech. How much they drink affects only how long this effect lasts for.bumper (thing)http://m.everything2.com/user/Tentacle+Penis/writeups/bumperTentacle Penishttp://m.everything2.com/user/Tentacle+Penis2000-08-23T17:41:10Z2000-08-23T17:41:10Z
A bumper is a thing on the back of your car, on which to place stickers that state your opinions to everyone else on the road. It first showed up in early to mid 2000. This display mode supports 1600x1200 resolution at 24bpp. The architecture is similar to that of SVGA, but uses a dual-pixel display rather than a single-pixel display.
voice actor (person)http://m.everything2.com/user/Tentacle+Penis/writeups/voice+actorTentacle Penishttp://m.everything2.com/user/Tentacle+Penis2000-07-29T02:33:41Z2000-07-29T02:33:41ZA person who lends their voice for recording, often for animation. Mel Blanc was one of these, for Warner Bros.' Looney Tunes cartoons. They are also hired for video games, narrators in commercials, unseen radio announcers in movies, and things of that sort.
As an interesting note, many companies hire Canadian voice actors over American ones, because they're significantly cheaper. Capcom does this, for example, in their Resident Evil games; nobody seems to be able to pronounce Raccoon City/raccoon properly. ;)audiobook (thing)http://m.everything2.com/user/Tentacle+Penis/writeups/audiobookTentacle Penishttp://m.everything2.com/user/Tentacle+Penis2000-07-29T02:22:58Z2000-07-29T02:22:58ZThe content of a book, occasionally abridged, recorded onto an audio tape, is known as a "book on tape", or sometimes an "audio book".

The best way for busy people to remain somewhat "well-read" may be through books on tape, simply because they're easy to listen to in the car. Sometimes the original author may read it, sometimes a voice actor. Occasionally a publisher makes a hideous error in judgement, and casts a voice actor for each of the characters, much in the style of a radio drama. I have yet to hear a truly good one of these. The rest of the time, however, it's nearly as good as the real thing. The real downside for me is that they take a horribly long time to finish; I average around 100 pages an hour when reading for myself, whereas a book on tape can take a couple of minutes per page. 8 - 10 hours worth of tape per book, coupled with a 20-minute car trip each way to work, means I finish a book on tape once every 12 - 15 days. I'd rather read the book, if I had the time.
For example, on a MUD I play (which shall remain nameless), you will be severely punished for going into an area with other characters who have never been there before, telling them anything about the area, or mentioning anything to do with any of the set "quests" the MUD offers.

As a result, you cannot group up with anyone to go do anything at all. All IC interaction happens in the main town of the game only. People won't tell you anything beyond if they're familiar with a place, in case they let slip something you might not have discovered for yourself. And even then, neither one of you can lead the other anywhere, because they might know something about the place that the other doesn't yet.

Doesn't this defeat the purpose of playing a multiplayer game in the first place? Is this really how "roleplaying" should be? What about the…
