I'm with the school of thought that sees Ave Verum Corpus as Byrd's crowning achievement as well.

William Byrd was about as radical as a Catholic could get. The Anglican church was the order of his day, with Catholicism outlawed and the Church of England mandatory. Byrd remained a devout Catholic in spite of government litigation, but he somehow got away with it thanks to his many powerful patrons, particularly Queen Elizabeth I herself.

Elizabeth gave Byrd uncompromising support, and despite fines as high as 500 marks and a year in prison, he only racked up 10 shillings in fines for his blatant defiance of the state church.

Ave Verum Corpus was composed in his later years, when his established presence as a musical heavyweight was unquestioned. He produced hundreds of pieces then, for a variety of musical media.

The precedents for this case were mixed: the "Slaughterhouse Cases" of 1873 had ruled that a state has the power to police businesses, particularly on behalf of the health and well-being of its residents; however, recent writings favoring Lassiez-Faire Constitutionalism particularly by judges Thomas Cooley and Christopher Tiedeman were reinterpreting the 14th Amendment to provide much less power to state police power in business.

The abridged ruling favored the state of Utah's power to police business practices. The most fascinating point, in my opinion, is highlighted in bold:

Every once in awhile, someone makes an attempt at wit, often involving shroom jokes and Bowser envy. I've given it a lot of thought, and as long as someone makes the attempt at something OTHER than "where's Luigi?", I am content.

But I have yet to hear a proper application of this one.

One of these days, I'm going to call up a girl and say, "hello, is X here?" The family member taking the call, recognizing my voice, will then say Thank you Mario! But our princess is in another castle!
