The 5S system was developed by Toyota. 5S was initially created too eliminate waste of time and materials in both manufacturing and production for the automotive industry.

5S goes as follows:

Seiri - keep only what is absolutely necessary, get rid of things that you don't need, i.e. simplify

Seiton - create a location for everything, i.e. organize

Seiso - clean everything and keep it clean, i.e. cleanliness

Seiketsu - implement Seiri, Seiton and Seiso plant wide, i.e. standardize

Shitsuke - assure that everyone continues to follow the rules of 5S, i.e. stick to it

The hope that one of us would learn to swim (idea)http://m.everything2.com/user/bluebear/writeups/The+hope+that+one+of+us+would+learn+to+swimbluebearhttp://m.everything2.com/user/bluebear2001-10-13T07:43:12Z2001-10-13T07:43:12Z
We need to learn to swim. "You first", I say, "Oh", you say, and instead we talk about what it would be like if one of us did learn. So often safer to remain on shore dreaming of swimming. Fly, Back, Breast, Free. There's an ocean between us and I sit here hacking at a cruise-liner with an ax, wishing you'd buy a rowboat and some oars. Still, if you did buy that rowboat, I'd probably build a plane and fly away, scared of what I'd actually do with you here.

While many claim not to understand or to enjoy the Fine Arts, most everyone understands and enjoys certain exceptional automobiles, or certain music, be it Beethoven, Blondie, or Blue Grass. Furthermore, we enjoy a finely designed and constructed home. We revel among beautiful landscaping, or a brilliant Landscape. I recently had an argument with an acquaintance, this particular acquaintance argued with such clarity and skill that I had no choice but to respect, and even enjoy, the artistry with which he chose his words, and though I never enjoy losing an argument, I was thankful for the opportunity to experience such a true artisan in action.
