The annual end of year week long party for Western Australian high school graduates. Very similar to the American Spring Break (and is called schoolies week in the East) except leavers is usually comprised of students finishing year twelve and a few older kids (particularly the ones at uni and want a break at the end of their exams) who remember how cool it was. Seen as the end of the long hard slog for the year 12 TEE students. Leavers usually begins in late November and is officially the week after all the TEE exams are over. However, quite often the situation arises where a group of mates have all finished their TEE (as the last week is for weird subjects like Modern Greek or Malay: Advanced) their leavers break can start on the final week of the TEE.

Students on leavers usually go for a week but some with stricter parents (or parents who know what goes on at leavers) only allow their child to go for a few days. Since being inaugural winners of the Triple J Unearthed competition, Grinspoon have become one of Australia's best rock outfits. Hailing from the Northern New South Wales town of Lismore, the band members Phil Jamieson (vocals), Pat Davern (lead), Joe Hansen (bass) and Kristian Hopes (drums) met during a jam night held at The Gollan. They then heard about the new competition Triple J was holding and decided to record the song Sickfest. The song won Grinspoon the competition and propelled them into the national rock scene.

After the unearthed drama was over, Grinspoon released few early EP's that contained some very good tracks (one such track being the song Champion, Phil always stirs the crowd into a frenzy when he screams the opening line: "So you wanna be a champion?"). Combined with a very vigourous touring schedule, Grinspoon became regulars on Triple J and a household name on the alternative scene. It is a body set up by the major four universities in Western Australia to allow a standard method of determining and classifying students academic abilities to allow universities to provide a system of "smartest ones first" for enrolment into university courses. Similar to the American ETS, only TISC is solely for WA, TISC administers the TEE and provides each students sitting those exams a TER. Western Australian students wishing to go to university in the next year have to call the TISC line around September to lodge your preferences. The TISC line phone call is usually the first stress causing incident leading up to the TEE for WA students because the line is either always engaged or the students have a constant fear of keying in the wrong preferences (even though the recorded voice relays the information about three times). TISC also conducts the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (the avenue for mature age students) and handles administration of the West Australian Universities Foundation Program.
What the...? Highly Evolved (thing)http://m.everything2.com/user/kanzax/writeups/Highly+Evolvedkanzaxhttp://m.everything2.com/user/kanzax2002-09-18T10:04:21Z2002-09-18T10:04:21Z

The debut album by The Vines. Widely regarded as one of the best debut albums ever made by a rock band since the eighties. The twelve tracks on Highly Evolved mesh between sharp pop-punk tunes such as the title track Highly Evolved and Get Free to the mellower ballads of Maryjane and Autumn Shade all the while littered with front man Craig Nicholls' shrieks and sreams. This album has all the elements of a true rock and roll record although doesn't really deliver anything new. It is easy to hear the influences of Nirvana and The Beatles throughout the LP and similarities between The Strokes and White Stripes.

Sydney rock group that has hit the big time with their debut album Highly Evolved. The Vines are brash, loud and in your face from the start. Lead guitarist and singer Craig Nicholls has attained a liking to smashing guitars and jumping on the drum kit while it is still being played. Other band members include bassist Patrick Matthews (who met Craig while working at a Macca's store) and drummer Hamish Rosser. Hamish originally played in a Kinks tribute band in Nevada but in late 2001 decided he wanted a change of direction and responded to an ad placed in Sydney's street press, which amongst other things asked for "An experienced live drummer. Think Nirvana, The Kinks, Stone Roses". Craig's mate Ryan Griffiths also plays with the band on acoustic guitar on occasion.

The name The Vines is named after Craig's father's old band from the sixties, The Vynes. And unlike it's namesake, The Vines have already made it big overseas. Starting
…
