Fourteen guidlines for the engaged Buddhist written by Thich Nhat Hanh. These are, of course, only intended to be guidelines, and certainly not hard-and-fast rules of any kind (note that the first precept establishes this)

1 Do not be idolatrous about or bound to any doctrine, theory, or ideology, even Buddhist ones. Buddhist systems of thought are guiding means; they are not absolute truth.

2 Do not think the knowledge you presently possess is changeless, absolute truth. Avoid being narrow minded and bound to present views. Learn and practice nonattachment from views in order to be open to receive others' viewpoints. Truth is found in life and not merely in conceptual knowledge. Be ready to learn throughout your entire life and to observe reality in yourself and in the world at all times.

3 Do not force others, including children, by any means whatsoever, to adopt your views, whether by authority, threat, money,

…Daylight (thing)http://m.everything2.com/user/possible/writeups/Daylightpossiblehttp://m.everything2.com/user/possible2002-04-18T00:51:10Z2002-04-18T00:51:10Z2002 EP by Aesop Rock.

The Pipe Dragon was invented in 1990 by Doug Waugh (1943-1999). Before the Dragon, halfpipes were constructed by hand with shovels, rakes, and lots of manpower. The Dragon made it possible for ski resorts to groom halfpipes quickly, consistently, and daily.

The Dragon uses a huge, quarter circle shaped arm attached to a snowcat and fitted with lots of small augers. The Dragon is driven down the pipe twice, cutting a fresh transition on each side.

Riding at resorts with dragons is awesome. The pipe is always fresh every morning and that nasty icy overhang that makes you fall so consistently never gets a chance to build up. Most resorts that have world-class halfpipes and nearly all halfpipe competitions use dragon-cut halfpipes.

Breckenridge (place)http://m.everything2.com/user/possible/writeups/Breckenridgepossiblehttp://m.everything2.com/user/possible2002-04-17T02:46:01Z2002-04-17T02:46:01ZSki area in Summit County, Colorado owned by Vail Resorts. Breckenridge is located 104 miles west of Denver. The mountain has 25 lifts and 2,000 acres of terrain, and the summit stands at 12,998 feet.

Breckenridge has lift access to three peaks and access by t-bar and good old-fashioned foot power to several alpine bowls. There are two base areas and various on-mountain retail locations and restaurants designed to sap you of your financial resources ("Nine dollars for a burger?" "Yeah, it... uh... costs a lot to... uh... get food up on a mountain like this..."), so bring your own food!

Breckenridge is considered to be one of the best resorts in the US, especially for snowboarders. There are two terrain parks, a smaller one that's good for learners and a huge, competition sized park with a 14-ft superpipe.

The problem of stupid rich yuppies is not nearly as bad at Breckenridge as it is at Vail, Beaver Creek, and other nearby ski areas because Breckenridge is more

…Vail Resorts (thing)http://m.everything2.com/user/possible/writeups/Vail+Resortspossiblehttp://m.everything2.com/user/possible2002-04-17T00:30:50Z2002-04-17T00:30:50Z

Owner and operator of Vail, Beaver Creek, Keystone, and Breckenridge ski resorts. Vail also owns the Grand Tetons Lodge Company and recently acquired Heavenly ski resort.

Vail truly is a corporate giant. In 2001 Vail's resorts made $520 million in revenue and received a total of 4.975 million skier visits. Vail's market share is 43% in Colorado and 8.7% in the United States. Vail was the most visited mountain in the United States in 2001.

Just about everyone who lives near and skis or rides at a Vail mountain ends up working for Vail at some time. Vail is by far the biggest employer in the towns near its mountains, and it controls the economy and politics of those towns as well.

Vail also controls a huge share of the real estate market near each of its mountains. Vail's real estate profits in 2001 were over 12 million dollars.

After working for a season at a restaurant at the top of Keystone's North Peak I can say that for such a giant, evil,

…Psychedelic drugs (thing)http://m.everything2.com/user/possible/writeups/Psychedelic+drugspossiblehttp://m.everything2.com/user/possible2002-04-16T04:22:56Z2002-04-16T04:22:56Z
The form in which eastern philosophy was exported to the cultural mainstream in the United States. Does it surprise anyone that a concept like enlightenment that can best be described by saying that any description of it is wrong wouldn't "take" in US culture in its current form, but little cardboard squares that briefly turn you into a god when you stick them on your tongue have been all the rage for years?

Personally, I love psychedelics, but it just makes me snigger quietly to myself like the pretentious jackass I am that such important ideas had to be distilled into a physical substance you can hold in your hand before it could fit into the average American's world view. Can we take any idea, no matter how good and productive it is, and twist it around so far that it supports our bizarre systems?
