Snowboarding and Ice hockey for women is introduced, and in the men's ice hockey the NHL allowed its players a few weeks off in order to compete in the games. Japan had home court advantage and won 10 medals, compared to the 19 it had won during all previous games combined. 

There is a 5.0 on the Richter scale earthquake during the games. Tara Lipinski becomes the youngest gold medallist ever in figure skating at 15 years and 7 months age. Björn Daehlie of Norway wins another 3 gold medals in cross country skiing, making his total eight.
