Telephone area code in Florida. At the inception of the North American Numbering Plan in 1947, 305 covered the entire state from Pensacola to Miami. 305 was divided into three area codes in the 1960's: the new 305 covered South Florida and the Space Coast, while 904 covered northern Florida and 813 covered southwest Florida.

There are now seventeen area codes in Florida. As they were created, 305 progressively shrank, first to the size of South Florida, and then to the size of Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. Now those areas are overlaid by the 786 area code, which is not that common, yet, but grows at an incredible pace.

305 is in many ways a testament to the population explosion in Florida following World War II.
