5-7-5 is the pattern of syllables used in writing the Japanese verse form called haiku.
To quote
Yoz's wonderfully
self-referential example:
five syllables start
then seven in middle line
and five make haiku.
However,
purists will note that since this example does not deal with
nature or the
seasons, it is probably closer to a
senryu.
