The 76th Academy Awards was held on Sunday February 29, 2004. This year the event was held a month earlier then previous years, as a response to the increasingly frantic plugging of films 'for your consideration' and to maintain the Academy's premier place in an expanding award calendar.

This year was hosted by Billy Crystal for the 8th time. There were not many surprises this year as the third Lord of the Rings film whitewashed the opposition with 11 out of 11 successes. Sean Penn also attended the ceremony for the first time despite having been nominated four times in the past. The highlight this year was Blake Edwards accepting his Oscar in a Pink Panther inspired high-speed wheelchair crash.
