This is a poem of hope,
written in a time of famine,
a time when human souls have poured
themselves from the rivers into
stagnant pools of self-reflection
that echo emptiness.

This is a poem of hope,
written of the light by which we see
the darkness, the light that fills
each desparate corner
with the possibility of joy, the choice
to make of ourselves that light
by which love abides.

This is a poem of hope,
written by someone surrounded
by the broken banners of suffering,
someone whose soul is battered and worn,
who has chosen to stand from the shadows
and show her face to
the one hope that is love.

This is a poem of hope.
