ABISHAG
(ab' i shag) HEBREW: AVISHAG
"my father is a wanderer"
_______________

When King David grew "old and advanced in years," Abishag, a beautiful young woman from Shunem, was selected to nurse him. She lay beside David so that her body would restore warmth and vigor to his, "but the king knew her not" (1 Kg. 1:1,4) - that is, he did not have sexual relations with her. After David's death, Solomon had his elder brother Adonijah executed for asking to marry Abishag. Solomon interpreted the request as but a prelude to a demand for the kingdom itself since Adonijah had been passed over for the succession.
