Four of us walked on,
The edge of the lot coming nearer.
The shadows were cool on your face
When the birds went by.
We stepped out,
New and absolute into the fallen fields,
Cornstalks poking out like hollow tubes
Collecting moonlight.

The moon cracked wide open,
We all fell smiling
Into this black cat outline on my shoulder.

Long liquid strings
From fingers, braiding our time
Together.
Faces like rope to swing out over the lake with,
“Don’t let go or you’ll ride by yourself.”

That was funny and impossible,
Our hands were locked together…
Who could let go?
