King of Northumbria (759-774)
Alhred came to power by forcing out the previous incumbent Aethelwald Moll in 759, apparently with "the counsel and consent of all his people" according to Simeon of Durham.
The most notable thing he did was to call in 773, the synod that decided to send Willehad off on a missionary expedition to preach Christianity to the Frisians.
In 774 he was forced out of office and replaced by Aethelred, son of the very Aethelwald Moll, whom he had forced out in 759. Alhred fled to Pictavia and into obscurity.
