The name of the Andean mountain cat (Leopardus jacobita) makes it pretty obvious that this little-known cat lives in the Andes Mountains of South America. It was first described to science in 1865, but the first sighting by a biologist was not made until 1985, and most of the information on it comes from two hours of observation, a few photographs, and some specimen skins. They seem to weigh about 8 pounds, with silver-gray fur with brown blotches and a long black-tipped tail. This coloration makes it very easy to blend in in the rocky Andes; those few that have been seen have usually been at an elevation of around 10,000 feet.
