The anopheles mosquito (Anopheles gambiae) is a small mosquito found in north Africa and the Middle East. Generally unremarkable, it is the vector for the malaria parasite. After biting an infected individual, the mosquito begins carrying the disease; the parasite reproduces in the mosquito's gut, and is transmitted to any mammals bitten by that mosquito.
