Αντινοη

Two women bear this name.

  1. A daughter of Cepheus from Mantinea. On the advice of an oracle she followed a snake and led the inhabitants of Mantinea to a spot where they founded a new town on the banks of the little stream Ophis (which means snake in Greek).
     
  2. According to some writers this was also the name of one of the daughters of Pelias. After the unintentional murder of her father (see Pelias and Medea) she fled, overcome with horror, as far as Arcadia. Her tomb could be seen near Mantinea.
