Poet, playwright, tenor saxophonist; from South Florida, but grew up in the fertile jazz ground of Philadelphia. Major figure of the 60's avant-garde, though his own playing was (at first) Straight Outta (1930's) Ben Webster. Highly politicized, he kept "Black Power" issues on an equal footing with his music, and incorporated James Brown riffs and Motown into some of his arrangements, in keeping with the Amiri Baraka trendy pop-negritude of the day.
