Arecibo, Puerto Rico, is home to Earth's largest single-dish radio telescope; part of the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center. http://www.naic.edu/ The SETI@home project lets ordinary small-computer owners help analyze data from the telescope and so participate in SETI, the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence.

Oddly enough, Arecibo Observatory is actually a good 25 minute drive from the actual city of Arecibo, and is much closer to tiny towns like Dominguito.
