Graphics technology company, purchased by ATI. Art-x was formed by people who left Silicon Graphics, or SGI. While at SGI, their best known work was the Nintendo64 chipset which was co-developed with Nintendo. This team later left SGI and formed Art-x. Nintendo then chose Art-x to provide the graphics for their system codenamed "dolphin" (which was later named "GameCube") SGI sued Art-x over intellectual properties, but the case went nowhere. Art-x was then purchased by ATI, under whom the GameCube's GPU (known as "flipper") was released. Since then Art-x has developed graphic processor cores for ATI, and helped ATI's GPUs outperform rival company Nvidia's products.
