One summer in Dayton,

we spent it  in her sister's house

I was killing time before starting grad school

she was working nights at a local bar

Mornings were basically afternoons-

we rarely fell out of bed before noon

I remember the hallway to the kitchen

small squares of afternoon light shone on hardwood floors

half a dozen odd shapes

from several West facing windows

they moved across the house as the afternoon

shuffled across the yard

I told myself I would take a picture so I could remember the images

it was one of several promises I broke
