Athul is one of the thousand-and-eight names of
Vishnu, the main
Hindu god. It is derived from the
Sanskrit word
thula, which as a
noun means
balance or
scales, and as a
verb means to
weigh. The a- prefix in Sanskrit means "un-" (much like in
Greek, as in "
a-gnostic"), so A-thula or Athul means "unweighable", or as applied to Vishnu, "he who cannot be weighed."
Of course, in this connotation, it also means many other things, including "he who is incomparable", which leads to "he who is greater than anyone else", which happens to be a fairly good description of a main god.
