One of the world's most durable and beneficial societies. Since its founding in 1905, the National Audubon Society (named after ornithologist, explorer, and wildlife artist John James Audubon) has always been a recognizable name when it comes to nature. Although the focus of the group has always been on birds, later efforts strived to help other vulnerable wildlife as well.
The first Christmas Bird Count in 1900, provided an alternative to the shooting of birds as a sport. The Christmas Day tradition continues today. Instead of shooting birds, enthusiasts now count birds in a yearly national census.
The society is still very environmentally active with its constant dedication in saving wetlands and forests. Audubon Magazine is still published and enjoyed worldwide as a way for enthusiasts to keep up on birdwatching changes and to enjoy bird art.
