Baby Be-Bop by Francesca Lia Block goes back in time before the Weetzie days to when Dirk was young, and details his experiences growing up gay. Because he has so many questions and fears about his sexuality, he is worried that his love is wrong and there is something the matter with him, especially since his grandmother insists it's "just a phase." But through a series of magical experiences, Dirk begins to see that the way he is different is not bad; it just takes some getting used to, for him and for other people.
