Toaster creation is an art, pure and simple. The designer of the toaster is constrained by the fact that bread, of the sliced variety, will always be approximately the same size. The designer must constantly focus on keeping the toaster compatible with the previously created toaster standards, this compatability is neccesary to avoid alienating consumers who use bread sliced in accordance with the industry bread slicing standard.

The backward compatibility of the toaster also applies to non-sliced bread products, such as bagels and waffles. In the past, for example, before bagels acheived their present popularity and heights of production, they were often purchased at local bakeries and suffered from non-standard production methods. For this reason, modern toaster designers must take into consideration the average size of bagels used in past decades. Who knows how many old bagels are just waiting to be toasted!??
