Overview

Banti's syndrome is a condition in which chronic congestion of the spleen leads to the premature destruction of red blood cells (hypersplenism).

Characteristics

In Banti's syndrome blood becomes obstructed in the hepatic portal vein, there is an increase in the size of the spleen (splenomegaly) and in blood pressure. Banti's syndrome is no longer very widely used; most often the syndrome is referred to as hypersplenism or splenomegaly.
