Spanish dramatist. Born c. 1485, died c. 1520.

Torres Naharro was familiar with both classical and contemporary Italian plays, and wrote his plays while living in Rome.

His most significant contribution to the theater is his theory of modern drama ("modern" for his time, that is), presented in the collection Propalladia (1517). In this, he divided plays into two groups: the authentic (comedia a noticia) which derive from real-world events; and the fictional (comedia a fantasía), which are made-up. He also developed a principle of theatrical decorum, which required actors to use diction in accordance with their rôle: the peasant to speak as a peasant, the nobleman as a nobleman, etc.
