Fought on a rise over the San Jacinto River near present-day Houston. The Texas Volunteers, led by Sam Houston, after days of retreat, took the Mexican army, led by Gen. Santa Ana in its fortified position by surprise, shouting "Remember the Alamo, remember Goliad" on 4-21-1836. This victory assured the success of American settlers in Texas in their war for independence from Mexico.
