Belgian Blue

Somewhat new to the United States, Belgian Blue has achieved a niche popularity due to its (relatively) healthy meat, which has lower fat and cholesterol levels than many other breeds (although some have claimed that this is due to poor marbling).

This node is part of Tem42's list of cattle breeds, entitled, simply, cattle.

The lean, "double muscled" build of the Belgian Blue is due to a natural genetic mutation that deprives the breed of effective myostatin. Myostatin is a protein that counteracts muscle growth. This mutation also interferes with fat deposition.

Unfortunately, because of this, Belgian Blues often have trouble supporting their own weight and must give birth through caesarean section.
