A seaplane Bertrand Russell was flying from Oslo to Trondheim landed in a gale and was blown over. All 19 non-smoking passengers died in the accident, but all the others, including the pipe-smoking Russell, made it through the Norwegian waters to the rescue boat. When the 76 year old was asked what he was thinking in those moments in the icy waters, he replied, “I thought the water was cold.”
