A Federal court case in which Jehovah's Witnesses argued under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act that the California Oath or Affirmation of Allegiance (a requirement for teaching in community college) was illegal since it was contrary to their religious beliefs to swear allegiance to a temporal power and the State could show no reason why they should. The plaintiffs won, and were exempted from the oath, but RFRA was soon overturned by the Supreme Court, making this moot.
