This is in reference to a quote John Lennon made to an English newspaper in which he was criticizing religion for not doing enough to interest young people. It made its way across the ocean months later and was quoted way out of context. Lennon later apologized under pressure and added:

"If I'd said television is more popular than Jesus I might have got away with it... but I just happened to be talking to a friend and used "The Beatles" like those other Beatles like other people see us. But I just happened to use it in that way, which was the wrong way..."

Most people accepted this. Unfortunately this event had already given a few narrow minded individuals ammunition to say that The Beatles denounced religion and worshipped the devil.
