A St. Louis collective formed in the 60s, inspired by the musical October Revolution in Jazz and the negritude of the nascent "Black Power" movement. It slightly predates the more-famous AACM but was relatively short-lived: leading lights like Julius Hemphill, Oliver Lake, drummer Charles "Bobo" Shaw, and trombonist Joseph Bowie (brother of Lester Bowie) headed east to New York. With BAG, Hemphill formed the DIY Mbari Records, recording the LPs that earned him his his early notoriety.
