Blue Cheer was a San-Francisco based psychedelic blues-rock band, formed in 1966. They supposedly got their name from one of Bear Owsley's LSD brands. Eric Albronda and Jerry Russell co-founded the band, wanting to break into the burgeoning San-Francisco rock scene. They moved with Dickie Peterson from Davis, California (Wertpech's current location) , to San Francisco. their original lineup was, Dickie Peterson singer/bassist, Leigh Stephens guitarist and Eric Albronda as drummer. The drummer was later replaced by Paul Whaley. Albronda continued his association with the band, being a member of their management, and co-producing five of their albums. Whaley,was joined by Dickie's brother Jerre Peterson (guitar), Vale Hamanaka (keyboards), and Jerry Whiting (vocals, harmonica). After seeing The Jimi Hendrix Experience perform at the Monterey Pop Festival, They decided to reconfigure into a power trio. The change in lineup left Dickie, Leigh and Paul as a trio. They are most famous for their hit cover of Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues."
