According to news reports in 2001-2002, Bojinka was the code-name of a plot by Islamist terrorists to blow up a number of US-based airliners fllying out of Asia in 1995. The plot is said to have been organized beginning in 1993 by Ramzi Yousef, an important al-Qaeda operative. It was foiled by Philippine security, although while testing his explosives Yousef is said to have set off two explosions in Philippine movie theatres and one aboard a flying plane (killing one person but not destroying the plane).

The name bojinka is said to be Serbo-Croat for "explosion", although I haven't been able to confirm this using on-line dictionaries.
