The religion is largely set on fate. Followers of Bokonon find that they belong to a karass, or a group of people that find themselves heavily associating with each other throughout their life. It has no boundaries. It is "as free-flowing as an amoeba."
Bokononism is nothing more than a system of lies created by its author.
Some of the first scripture Vonnegut quotes from The Books of Bokonon is the Fifty-Third Calypso, which explains the establishment of a karass:
