A
city in the North of
England. Bradford is a close neighbour of
Leeds and they are both in the
county of
West Yorkshire. The city's heritage is strongly linked with the
textile industry. Its situation, alongside the
canal that linked
Leeds to
Liverpool, ensured that many woollen mills were built there.
Bradford's origins, however, date back as far as Roman times, when it was a small settlement where iron ore was mined.This is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Close to Bradford is the village of Haworth, where the Bronte sisters lived. Bradford also gave us the artist David Hockney and the author JB Priestley.
There is a strong Asian presence in the city nowadays which has added greatly to the diversity of the area. Great beer, (Tetley, Theakstons and more), great curry and a good centre for rock climbing make Bradford an interesting place to be a student.
