Bread not Circuses an organization and a tendancy, has been active in Toronto for many years, and has been led by Michael Shapcott.

Originally active in the Ontario NDP, Shapcott left for a variety of reasons, primarily ideological.

This group's activity has been advocacy of the homeless and poor in Toronto, and a principled opposition to Toronto 2008.

The group's vision of bread, not circuses--against the diversion of the people with development, Olympics, organized sports, and for affordable housing, meaningful work for all at a living wage--is out of tune with dominant business, and corporate interests, so, for the most part, it is ignored by the mainstream press, and ridiculed when it is noticed.

With the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty, it is among the few who strive against the corporatization of life, and demonization of the poor and homeless.
