n. (also called shore fly) - Any of the Ditperan flies of the family Ephydridae that inhabit the shorelines of highly saline bodies of water, specifically brine lakes, to feed upon the algae that grow along the shore.

Most brine flies have a lifespan of 3 to 4 days. They are an abundant food source for flamingos and other wildlife around brine lakes. Native American tribes used to gather both the adult flies and the fly pupae as food.
